Makerere University Kenyan student association (MUKESA) team visiting mullanda refugee camp were stranded at Malaba- Busia Junction when the Bus fell- short of fuel yesterday.
The driver exchanged words with the MUKESA chairman Dalmas Musembi. Fellow student had to intervene in order is calm –down them. The driver claimed that the chairman had promised him budget for fuel was available. He condemned Musembi for he had told him the required amount of fuel for the journey but he ignored.
On his side Musembi thought the driver was foul playing. He said, “This is not the first time the driver has done it. In our trip to a funeral to Kisumu he did the same.”
At first the bus was fueled 74 litres, which was enough for the trip to Mullanda, however, it couldn’t finish the journey back to university.
A Good Samaritan saved the situation when he rushed to the next petrol station and bought 20 litres of diesel. He also had to use the soldier commanding the check- point to get his shs 42,000 from the financial organizer Daniel Mwaura Ngure.
The fuel was only enough to take the bus to the next available petrol station which was at Bugiri. The driver ordered the chairman to fuel 80 litres to cover the rest of journey. At this point Ngure had only shs 20,000 on his pocket. After half- an- hour argument their resolved each passenger in the bus to raise a minimum of shs. 4000 which added up to shs. 120,000 below the required. Shs 175000.
The driver was forced to dig- deeper in his pocket and raised shs.50, 000 to meet the required money.
The bus which has a capacity of 62 passengers had only 35 passengers who Majority had contributed shs. 8000 while few had paid shs.5000, a situation which neither the chairman nor the financial organizer could explain. Dean of student had given out the bus free while the organization had to raise the fuel plus allowance for the driver.
The student blamed the out- going chairman and problems in MUKESA for the mess “This is a manifestation of weak leadership in MUKESA.” said waweru Mathu.
